What is a Scrumboard?

A Scrumboard is a visual tool from Agile Project Management, and more particularly from the Scrum framework, which is designed to help teams manage their tasks in a well-organized manner—to track work progress in a sprint. By visually representing the tasks, a Scrumboard makes communication and transparency much easier by simply keeping the team aligned on project goals.

Key Components of a Scrumboard

  1. Columns Representing the Stages of Workflow

    • To-do: This column represents all the work the team needs to complete in a sprint. It is usually written as tasks on sticky notes or digital cards.

    • In Progress: When work on a specific task starts, it gets moved into the "In Progress" column. This step of the process enables the team to visualize what work is in progress.

    • Testing/Review: When the work is completed, the task often moves into a column for "Testing" or "Review" for quality control.

    • Done: The last column, where tasks are moved when they are fully complete and meet the "done" definition established with the sprint.

  2. Task Cards: Each task is represented by a card on the Scrumboard. These cards typically include a description of the task, who is responsible for it, and any relevant details or deadlines.

  3. Sprint Goals: Many Scrumboards have a field for the sprint goal to maintain focus for the team on the overall objective of the sprint.

  4. Burndown Chart (Optional): Some Scrumboards will also include a burndown chart that visually plots the remaining work in the sprint over time, enabling the team to track progress and make predictions about meeting their sprint goal.

Physical vs. Digital Scrumboards

  • Physical Scrumboards: Generally, these are simple whiteboards with sticky notes or cards for tasks that can be moved around. They are easy to update and provide a very tangible way for teams to interact with their work.

  • Digital Scrumboards: With the rise of remote work and digital tools, many teams today use software-based Scrumboards. Such tools offer extended functionality, like task tracking, reporting, and integration with other project management tools.
